A pleated wire mesh filter is essentially a piece of woven wire mesh and sintered fibre media (usually stainless steel) folded in an accordion style to pack a large surface area into a compact size. Think of a sheet of wire mesh folded back and forth many times. This pleating greatly boosts the filter’s surface area; a pleated filter’s area can be 5–10 times larger than an unpleated filter. In turn, a larger area means finer filtering and more dirt capacity.
Pleated wire mesh filters are made of woven wire mesh with micro openings and they’re prized for their long lifespan and easy cleaning. So that a large surface can fit in a small housing. In use, the folded mesh is usually supported by a rigid coarser mesh to keep its shape.
When liquid flows through an SS pleated mesh filter, it is forced through the tiny gaps (pores) in the metal cloth. Contaminants are trapped on the mesh, and the cleaned fluid passes through. Filters have a micron rating to indicate their pore size. A micron (µm) is one-millionth of a meter.
The micron rating measures the distance between threads in the mesh. In simple terms, a “10-micron” filter will trap particles around 10 µm and larger, while a 50-micron filter has bigger holes and catches only larger particles.
(Smaller micron ratings = finer filtration, but the filter will fill up faster.) Another term, pleat density, refers to how tightly the mesh is folded (how many pleats per inch). Higher pleat density means more mesh surface packed inside, yielding even more filtration area without needing a bigger filter body.
