Polymer Candle Filters is designed and developed to remove impurities such as gels and other solid infiltrates from polymer melt in chemical fibertextiles and plastic industries.

These filters are exposed to High Temperatures and Pressure. The strength and performance of the filter are very critical to the application as the complete process of producing fiber or yarn is dependent on these filters.

Different Types of Polymer Candle Filter for Finest Filtration

a) Pleated Wire Mesh Candle Filter

Pleating is a folding wire process that meshes back upon itself and secures it to increase the filtration area. The wire mesh pleated candle filter consists of one filtration wire mesh and two support mesh.

The support meshes protect the filtration mesh from direct contact with the molten polymer. Depending upon the quality of the final product required and the backpressure of the extruder screw, the user may increase the number of wire mesh.

The Pleated structure increases the filter’s filtration area, increases the dirt-holding capacity, and maintains low pressure in the machine.

The pleated filter’s filtration area is 5-10 times larger than the regular cartridge-shaped filter element.

b) Pleated Sintered Fibre Candle Filter

A sintered fiber media replace the fine filtration wire mesh. The process of producing the filter remains the same, but the results and applications are different.

Metallic fiber felt developed by RajFilters is made using stainless steel fibers of minimal diameters and varied length; the fibers are dispersed uniformly on an identified surface. Then the process of lapping, lamination, and high-temperature sintering is carried out.

Advantages

  • Multi-layers metallic fiber felt with graded pore sizes formed by layers of different fiber diameters can achieve high filtering accuracy and higher dirt holding capacity.
  • Metallic thread felt has excellent porosity, due to which the differential pressure is low.
  • The metallic yarn felt has a high dirt holding capacity, which increases the filter’s stream life and can be used multiple times.
  • The most important part of the filter element is the welding of the wire mesh ends; the small fibers produce excellent weld quality helping the filter achieve an accurate filtration rating.

Specification of Sintered Fiber Media

The “RF series-A and RF series-C” sintered fibre felt ensures increased product quality and extended polymer candle filter life. All this sums up to higher productivity and lower costs.

  • The filtration area achieved is 0.07 m2 with a Spigot Outer diameter of 63 mm and a total length of 116mm.
  • Special Tig Welding fixtures and gauges were developed to achieve the required specifications.
  • The complete MOC of the filter is Stainless Steel 304.
  • The filtration accuracy is 40 microns nominal.
  • The Filtration mesh used is a woven hollander wire mesh sandwiched between the coarser plain mesh.

Nomenclature of Pleated Candle Filter

  1. Adaptor: The adaptor also known as the filter core, provides the necessary strength to the filter. Mostly the flow of liquid is IN to OUT. The fluid enters the filter through the adapter Bush and passes from the adapter core to the filtration media.
  2. Perforated Guard: It protects the wire mesh from getting punched in material handling. A tiny puncher in material handling can lead to the failure of the filter.
  3. Support Mesh: The final filtration mesh is delicate and has a sufficient aperture size, so to avoid damage and temporary blockage of the fine mesh, it’s preferable to give a support layer at the top and bottom.
